Malcolm is Nina's godfather and owner of the affordable Nomad Apartments in Little Taipei District. He's a stern, but fair landlord housing diverse tenants from retirees to college students.

Malcolm is at a constant war between his cynical and hopeful side. He is an everyman who's burnt out against the world's bullshit. All he wants is to take care of Nina under her missing parents' blessing.

Malcolm hopes Nina grows up to be better person than her parents. He's aware he failed teaching Nina her enthic background and her Asian identity despite living in the center of an Asian-American enclave ironically. All that he can provide is to cook her favorite dish: beef noodle soup, a dish he mastered just for her.
